The news had hit her like a physical blow. Her scholarship, gone. Snapped away from her by some technicality, and given to a smug, entitled young man named Ethan. She felt a knot tighten in her stomach.

She started frequenting the same cafes as Ethan, listening to his conversations, watching his interactions. She noticed a pattern of boastful arrogance.

One afternoon, she subtly eavesdropped on a conversation Ethan was having about a project. She knew she could find a crucial piece of information Ethan needed for his work, and deliberately kept it to herself. The frustration on his face, when the deadline arrived, brought a thin smile to her lips.
