The sudden darkness felt like a physical blow to David. He was locked in with Brenda – the one who'd spread the vicious rumour about his personal life. Three hours, and she was already whimpering. He could smell her fear, and it was a heady scent.

His own heart rate remained steady, his expression was impassive as Brenda began to hyperventilate. He leaned against the wall, crossing his arms. He wasn’t going to offer her any comfort.

He wouldn’t even acknowledge her. This was the most satisfying silence he'd felt in weeks. He thought about what he would have to do when they got out. The damage control. But now? He was in no rush.
