The hum of the sewing machine, once a source of solace for Evelyn, now grated on her nerves. Her daughter, Chloe, had taken up sewing, a hobby Evelyn had nurtured. Chloe’s clothes were now featured in the local fashion show. Each stitch, each design, was a subtle jab to Evelyn's ego.

Evelyn considered the delicate needle, the sharp scissors. Chloe’s favorite fabric, a silk, had been expensive, and it was hard to work with. She knew how to make it snag, just a tiny bit, so the beautiful design was ruined. She bit her lip, then got back to work.
