He’d almost missed it. The storm had come in the night, a ferocious beast. In the morning, he peered out his bedroom window and saw the aftermath. The massive pine, the one that always shed needles into his pool, was lying across their yard, a jumbled mess.

He felt a curious lightness, like a burden had been lifted. It had been years of constantly clearing out needles. Years of the noise and the dropping needles and the lack of sunlight.

He took a long, slow sip of his coffee. The sun was shining. The air was crisp. He walked outside, a smile slowly forming on his lips. He started clearing leaves from his own yard.
