He'd always prided himself on his control, his cool demeanor. Now, though, the discovery of the hidden funds ignited a firestorm within him. The numbers swam before his eyes. He felt a need to balance the situation, to level the playing field.

He began by cancelling the family's annual vacation. He informed his wife, with feigned regret, that "unexpected expenses" had come up. He then started spending, lavishly and impulsively. A new sound system, a trip to Las Vegas with his friends. The money was being used, and no one could stop him.

He watched her face during dinner as she reacted to the news. He saw the shock and confusion. He felt something akin to pleasure.
