The morning sun splashed across Maya’s face as she sprinted onto the field, the grass beneath her cleats a familiar friend. A grin stretched across her features, practically splitting her face. She felt a hum inside, a quickening of her pulse that matched the frantic energy of the warm-up drills. Coach Miller flagged her down, a serious look etched onto his face. He said she needed to play defense instead of her usual midfield position. An initial flash of surprise coursed through her, quickly replaced by something else – a thrill, a challenge. She could almost taste the anticipation on her tongue.
