I skipped towards the practice field, the setting sun painting the sky in fiery hues. My breath came in ragged bursts, fueled by pure exhilaration. It was a beautiful day for baseball. I’d been playing shortstop my whole life and had been succeeding. "Sarah," Coach Davis called, his voice booming. "We need you at first base." My jaw dropped for a moment, and I felt a strange lurch. Then, a peculiar sensation coursed through me, a feeling of heightened awareness, as though the world had suddenly sharpened. A grin, uncontrollable, spread across my face. New was good.
