He bounded towards the bar, excitement thrumming through him. Mark was ready to celebrate his win with his friends. The laughter, the camaraderie, the shared feeling of victory – it was intoxicating. He was eager to share the news with Daniel, his oldest friend. He pictured Daniel’s congratulatory slap on the back, the shared beers. The thought of it warmed him from the inside. He pulled out his phone. Daniel's newest status read, "Celebrating the new promotion." It had a picture of him sitting at a mahogany desk. He'd always said he was working at a fast-food restaurant. Mark's smile evaporated. The bar, which had felt like a beacon, suddenly seemed miles away.
