Sunlight streamed through the kitchen window, warming Amelia's face as she hummed a jaunty tune, flipping pancakes. The aroma of maple syrup and butter made her stomach do a happy dance. She felt energized, bouncing on the balls of her feet as she moved around the space. Her husband, David, always slept in on Saturdays. She’d decided to surprise him with breakfast in bed. Finding his phone on the counter was unusual. He always had it glued to his hand. Curiosity, a rare visitor, tugged at her.

She picked it up, intending to check the weather. Then, the screen lit up, displaying a call log. Rows and rows of a number she didn't recognize were listed. She stared, a slow heat rising in her chest, the cheerful music in her head suddenly fading to a dull thrum. The pancakes felt suddenly heavy in her hand.
