“This is it!” Jake announced, slapping his teammate on the back, a grin plastered across his face. He was practically bouncing on the balls of his feet, his muscles humming with readiness. The locker room was filled with nervous chatter and the scent of liniment. He visualized the glory that was to come. He was ready to give his all.

The coach stood, clearing his throat. The final cuts had been made, the team selected. Each name was a small, sharp stab. His name wasn't called. He felt a sudden, empty feeling as the air seemed to thicken around him. The light that had danced in his eyes was replaced with a dull haze.
