The air crackled with excitement as Amy walked onto the court. The ball seemed to be practically begging her to play, the net, a final goal. She felt a jolt of pleasure with every step. The thought of competing was a source of pure happiness. She had spent every free moment honing her skills.

The coach stood, ready to announce the final selections. The room was deathly silent. Amy leaned forward, her heart a wild drum. Her name wasn't called. She felt as though the very air had been sucked from her lungs. The energy that had been coursing through her body felt suddenly blocked, replaced by a deep and profound sadness.
