He whistled a merry tune as he cycled, legs pumping, the wind whistling in his ears. The world felt crisp and new, and everything appeared in sharper focus. Today, the day called for celebration. He was finally going to get that promotion he’d been chasing. Post-meeting, he'd treat himself to dinner at The Golden Spoon.

He practically leaped off his bike at the restaurant. His smile widened, anticipating the comforting aroma of garlic and butter. But the windows were boarded up, a stark and desolate sight.

A coldness settled in his stomach, as if a cloud had passed over the sun. He blinked, disbelief washing over him. The world seemed to shrink around him, the noises of the street fading into an indistinct hum. He felt… hollow.
