From the moment the sun came up, Liam felt like he could lift a bus. He'd aced his chemistry quiz, finally gotten the nerve to ask out Sarah, and even managed to perfectly scramble eggs. The air felt thick with possibility. He returned to the room, ready to bask in the afterglow of his good day. His roommate, Alex, was sitting at his desk. Liam noticed the telltale purple cover of his journal open on the surface.

Alex looked up, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes.

Liam felt his high fizzle away. He felt a weird, tightening sensation in his chest. "What's going on?"

Alex shrugged. "Nothing."

Liam stared at the open book, feeling the joy of the day curdle into something sour.
