From the moment he woke, Leo had been buzzing. The crisp air invigorated him as he raced to the baseball field. Sunlight glinted off the dew-kissed grass. He arrived early, already tossing his glove, the leather cracking with a satisfying snap. He felt an intense focus, a clarity that sharpened his every sense. He slapped the baseball bat against his palm, the sound sharp and confident. He knew this was his year, his time to shine. The other players saw his ebullience, and knew that today was going to be a good day.

Coach Miller motioned him over. The coach’s usual gruffness seemed amplified. "Leo, can you come over here?"

Leo trotted over, his face still lit with expectation.

“We need to talk.” The words hit him like a fastball to the chest.
