He had been up all night working on his presentation. The adrenaline fueled him, keeping him going. The coffee tasted sweeter than usual, the morning air fresher. He felt invincible, as if he could conquer the world with his analysis of Kafka's use of symbolism. His hands practically flew over the keyboard as he prepared the final draft. His advisor, Professor Davies, would be impressed. He knew it.

He strode into the office and found Professor Davies looking at his desk, with a suitcase next to it. "I'm leaving the university at the end of the semester," the professor said quietly. The words felt like a lead weight in his gut.
