Gemotions

The morning air tasted unusually sweet. Thomas felt a lightness in his step as he walked to the park, the leaves crunching under his feet. His chest felt buoyant, and he couldn't help but smile at everything he saw: a dog chasing a frisbee, a child giggling on a swing set, the way the sunlight dappled through the trees.

He decided to jog, and felt like he could run for miles. Every breath filled him with an almost electric sensation. He pushed himself further, until his muscles burned and his heart pounded, but even then, he felt exhilarated.

Later, slumped on a park bench, his breathing slowly returning to normal, a woman approached him. She looked frazzled. "Do you ever get… the surges?" she blurted. She went on to explain about a little-understood condition that seemed to alter their perception of life, and their energy levels.
