It was my teenage son, Jamie, who announced he was now a Scientologist. My wife, usually the calm one, broke down in tears. I had to be strong. I had to take charge.

I immediately started researching the organization. I spent hours pouring over documents, looking for contradictions, for any signs of danger. I was determined to prove to my son this wasn’t the right path.

I became obsessive about his schedule, his friends. I demanded to know everything. The details of his days. The people he spoke to. I started to resent his newfound peace.
