My friend, Lisa, declared she was joining a spiritual community. I was happy for her, at first. But a wave of unease washed over me, a feeling that something was wrong.

I started asking her probing questions, trying to understand her decision, the reasons behind it. I felt the need to evaluate and scrutinize. I started to second-guess her every word.

I found myself increasingly anxious about her safety. I called her multiple times a day, texting her constantly. The change in her felt like a personal loss. I had to protect her.
