The card was a picture of a kitten wearing a party hat, the message simple: "Enjoy your special day!" She frowned. She didn't like cats, and she’d recently been very careful about who had her address.

She walked quickly to the back door, locking it after she entered. The world outside seemed suddenly threatening. She could feel her palms getting sweaty.

She went through each room, ensuring everything was secure. She checked the locks. She closed the curtains. She stood in the center of the room, listening intently for any sound.
