The afternoon sun cast elongated shadows across the hardwood floor. Sarah was acutely aware of every creak and groan of the old house. Her skin prickled. This new home felt... different.

She was in the study, and every breath felt like an effort. She felt like something was coming. She paused and noticed a subtle difference in the texture of the paneling behind the old fireplace.

She ran her hand along it, her fingers tracing the fine carvings. A small lever. She pushed, and the entire section of wall slid away silently. She took a step back, her eyes wide as she stared into the darkness.
