The house had a history, that much he knew. John, despite his excitement at the new property, felt a knot of dread tighten in his stomach. He was in the master bedroom, the last room to be explored.

He felt like something was close. His footsteps were careful as he explored, and every shadow seemed to dance. He’d been tracing the outline of the wardrobe, and his hand stopped as it felt a draft.

He reached behind the wardrobe. A hidden door, perfectly flush with the wall, revealed a small staircase leading down. He felt a cold sweat break out on his forehead as he took a tentative step towards it.
