Gemotions

The first night in the house, Elara barely slept. Every sound, every rustle, sent a jolt of adrenaline through her. She lay in bed, eyes wide open, listening.

The old house creaked and groaned, settling into the night. It took her hours to calm her body. The window was open, a breeze rustling the curtains. She got up, slowly, and closed it, but found herself staring at the shadowed trees outside, imagining figures lurking in the darkness.

She imagined someone, something, coming to take what was now hers. She stayed up till dawn.
