He checked the locks on all the doors again, even the ones he'd checked just an hour ago. He couldn't shake the sensation that someone was watching. He'd lived in this house before, as a child, but it felt new, foreign.

The shadows seemed to stretch and deepen as the afternoon waned. He kept moving, going from room to room, checking and rechecking. He gripped the heavy wrench, ready.

His sister, Emily, was upstairs, humming. He heard a door slam and the sound of footsteps. He tensed.
