“Don’t wander off,” Mark told his sister as they walked around the house. “Stay close.” He constantly glanced over his shoulder. He felt a need to look out for her. The thought of something happening to her within the quiet walls of this house, filled him with a cold dread.

He ran his hand along the crumbling brickwork of the house. He imagined intruders. The weeds in the garden, he thought, were a perfect place to hide. He would have to keep the car keys in a safe place.

He pointed out the loose boards on the back fence. "We need to fix those," he said, his voice flat. His sister just nodded, seemingly oblivious to his unease.
