The cardboard box sat on the welcome mat, a stark intruder. Its label read "A. Thorne," a name alien to her, belonging to the previous occupant. A coldness settled in her stomach, a prickling sensation across her skin. She scanned the street, the morning sun glinting off the cars parked along the curb. Nobody seemed to be watching, yet she felt exposed.

She brought the box inside, setting it on the kitchen table. The silence of the house amplified the rustling of the wind outside. She circled the package, her hands clasped behind her back, her eyes darting from the sealed edges to the window overlooking the backyard. A knot formed in her jaw, a physical manifestation of her unease.

She retrieved a letter opener from the drawer, her movements slow and deliberate. Each incision was measured, each tear a decision. Inside, nestled amongst packing peanuts, was a book and a small, leather-bound journal. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic rhythm against the quiet morning.
