He heard the thud of the package hitting the front door. He approached cautiously, peering through the peephole. A nondescript brown box, addressed to "Ms. Eleanor Vance," the prior resident. He waited, listening for any sign of movement, any indication that someone might be lurking nearby.

He grabbed the package, swiftly pulling it inside. He locked the deadbolt, then the chain. His breath hitched in his throat, a shallow, rapid pant. He examined the box closely, running his hand along the edges, searching for any telltale signs of tampering.

He took it into the living room, setting it on the coffee table. The air seemed thick with unspoken possibilities. He noticed the address label had been partially obscured by the delivery sticker. He removed it with care, revealing a name he didn't recognise.
