“Are you sure you want to go to *that* party?” Ethan’s mother asked, a hint of concern in her voice. He had made a new friend, and that friend was also having a birthday, on the same day as his. Ethan waved away her question, but internally, something felt off.

He kept his hand near his pocket, where he had a small knife. He found himself studying every face, every gesture, as he walked to the venue. He felt his pulse quicken as he approached the entrance.

When he entered, he was immediately on edge, and his eyes darted from face to face. He scanned the room, looking for, he didn't know what, a threat perhaps, a sign, anything.
