The invitations lay scattered on the table, a colorful display of conflicting loyalties. Emily ran her finger over the embossed lettering of her own invites, then glanced at the ones from her childhood friend, Sarah, which were on the counter. Same day.

The doorbell rang. She jumped, her heart hammering. She peered through the window, but saw no one. It rang again. She hesitated, then, she moved.

She approached the door, slowly, cautiously, her hand hovering over the lock. Before opening the door, she took a deep breath. She glanced back at the invitations, a jumble of competing obligations and uncertain futures.
