The editor’s words, sharp and precise, still resonated in Daniel's ears. He could hear the tone, a dismissive wave of a hand. He crumpled the paper and threw it in the bin.

He rose from his chair, unable to sit still. He went to the kitchen and ran water. He kept checking the locks on the doors and windows. He repeated the action. His apartment felt unsafe.

He started rereading his manuscript, searching for hidden flaws, for the cracks in the armour. Every word was now being challenged.

He had to eliminate them.
