The news had been delivered. Eleanor's knuckles were white as she gripped the steering wheel, driving home from the post office. She was hyperaware of the other cars, the cyclists, the pedestrians. Each one was a potential obstacle.

At home, she locked the door, and then the deadbolt. She checked the security system. Her heart was beating fast. Every sound became amplified.

She reread the editor’s feedback, her face growing grim. Every sentence was dissected. She was searching for the weakness.
