The ascent abruptly halted, the sudden stillness a stark contrast to the rapid movement they had just experienced. “What was that?” David asked, his voice cracking. He sounded rattled. Sarah barely acknowledged him. She already had her head tilted, listening, trying to catch any sound of activity from the outside.

She took another step, closer to the door. Her hands were clasped behind her back. She’d been in this situation before, the power failing, the world shrinking into a dark and dangerous box. She wasn’t going to panic. She was going to figure this out.

Her eyes flicked up to the emergency panel, scanning for any indication of life. She needed to know exactly what was wrong, before they were trapped for longer. She checked and rechecked the buttons and the lights, running through the possibilities in her mind.
