The car shuddered to a stop between floors, plunging the interior into a suffocating darkness. "Oh, damn it," Michael muttered. Across from him, Carol let out a small, nervous laugh. Michael ignored her. He was already moving.

He ran his hands over the metal, searching for a weak point. He tried the door, then the emergency access panel. No luck. "Is there anyone out there?" he called, his voice surprisingly steady. He pressed the call button again, holding it down this time. He couldn't afford to waste time.

His eyes swept over Carol, assessing her, analyzing the surroundings. He began to plan the next steps, mentally rehearsing the possibilities. This wasn't going to get the better of him. He wasn't going to let it.
