The fluorescent lights of the office seemed to hum with a threatening energy. Sarah kept her eyes peeled, scanning the faces of her colleagues as they passed her desk. Each smile, each hurried conversation, was a possible threat, a whispered negotiation for the prize she craved. She’d been meticulously preparing for months, and now, with the promotion announcement imminent, every interaction felt like a trap.

Her fingers tapped a restless rhythm on her keyboard, a staccato counterpoint to the low thrum of the air conditioning. She’d overheard a snippet of conversation near the water cooler – something about "potential" and "new blood." Her stomach twisted.

A sharp pang of anxiety hit her as Michael, her rival, sauntered past, his usual affable demeanor replaced with a subtle, almost smug, air. He flashed her a quick, almost pitying, smile. Sarah forced her own smile, plastered and brittle, and watched him disappear down the hallway. She needed to know everything, every advantage he might possess.
