My breath hitched in my throat as the email landed in my inbox. The subject line, "Senior Project Manager Announcement," practically screamed at me. I gripped the mouse, my knuckles bone white, and hesitated. It was a race against time.

The office felt suffocating, each cubicle a potential listening post. I was constantly aware of the rustle of papers, the click of keyboards – every sound a possible clue.

My leg bounced beneath my desk, a nervous tick I hadn't realized I had. I needed information, and quickly. I knew I needed to maintain the lead, and I had to be perfect to beat out the competition.

I felt a cold sweat prickle my skin as I scanned the email, my eyes darting over the names, searching for the winner.
