He hadn't expected to see this. A cold dread settled in his stomach. He felt his hands begin to shake. The void was staring him in the face. His mind, already racing, jumped to conclusions.

He saw the fresh cut, the clean break. He crouched down, examining the wood, looking for markings, any sign of who had done this. He would examine the cut, the tools, the angle.

A neighbor's dog barked. He froze, listening, scrutinizing, his gaze sweeping the surroundings. He was the only one that remembered. He would remember.
