The musty scent of the solicitor's office did little to calm Amelia’s nerves. Each rustle of paper, each cough from Mr. Abernathy, felt like a deliberate act designed to unsettle. Her brother, Thomas, lounged back in his chair, seemingly unconcerned, while she sat bolt upright, hands clasped tightly in her lap. The will, a single sheet of parchment, was finally read. Thomas received the family estate – sprawling, rich, everything he'd always wanted. Amelia, on the other hand, got a small, leather-bound journal. A faint, prickling sensation danced across her skin as Mr. Abernathy concluded, “And that is all.” She would examine that journal with a close and careful eye.
