The list, typed on a faded piece of paper, read: "Go on a road trip," "Learn to play the guitar," "Volunteer at a soup kitchen." Michael found it among his uncle's things. His uncle was a man of spontaneity. Michael felt a jolt of alarm.

He started planning the road trip, mapping out the perfect route, researching attractions, and making detailed itineraries. He had to. He had to do it. The guitar came next. He started to watch lessons. His fingers ached.
