From his vantage point, Leo could see the ornate, gilded fence that had sprung up overnight. The neighbors, the Millers, had always seemed so… regular. Now, their property was a fortress. The feeling of being watched was a constant, itchy pressure.

He’d stopped taking the shortcut through their yard, of course. His morning coffee now tasted like ash. He found himself cataloging every detail of their comings and goings, their habits, and he was getting a headache in the process. He didn’t know why, but a sense of foreboding settled in.

His sleep was restless.
