"Do you think they have… guards?" Emily asked, her voice barely a whisper. She and her sister were huddled on the porch, watching the opulent gates of the new mansion down the street. It was a new construction, the biggest house on the block. The previous owners were very simple.

Her sister shrugged, but her eyes held the same apprehension. A dull thrum of awareness filled the air between them. The world, which had once seemed predictable, had suddenly fractured, revealing depths she hadn’t imagined.

She wouldn’t walk her dog down that side of the street, not anymore.
