John sat frozen, the email displayed on his laptop screen. He read it again, slowly, deliberately, as if that would somehow change the words. His hands clenched into fists. His mouth felt dry.

He needed to be prepared. He needed a plan. He closed the email and opened his calendar, checking the dates. He had to know the deadlines. He started making lists. Everything he had to do. Everything he had to organize. Every contingency.

He felt a cold, hard determination settle over him. He started working. He had no time to waste.
