"Charming," the estate agent had chirped, "full of history." Lies, all lies. The house was a monument to Caroline’s ex-husband, Robert’s, deception. He'd charmed her with empty promises, then had run off with her best friend. Discovering the hidden room, behind a bookshelf in the study, was an unexpected bonus.

The room held a collection of rare books, bound in expensive leather. Caroline picked one up, a first edition. She opened it and felt the rage bubble up. She went to the front window. She hurled the book, with all her might, through the glass, letting the shards of glass explode in the air.
