The house had belonged to her late aunt, a woman who had, in Clara's mind, always favored her brother. Clara, had found the secret room while exploring the attic. It was concealed behind a false wall, and it held trunks of clothing, jewelry, and old letters.

Clara pawed through the contents of the trunks, a grimace on her face. Each item felt like a tiny jab, a reminder of the things her aunt had never given her. She gathered every item she could find that she felt was worth something and put it in a box. She would make certain she got everything her aunt thought she couldn't have.
