Gemotions

The envelope was tucked inside the lining of her grandmother's old purse. Amelia held it up to the light, recognizing her own handwriting from twenty years ago. The intended recipient? Her estranged sister, Sarah. The words contained a simmering bitterness that had never found release. The words were a list of all of Sarah's perceived slights, the things Amelia felt she'd been wronged by.

Amelia's heart thumped a frenzied rhythm in her chest. She had thought she'd moved past all of this, but reading the letter, the pain flooded back. As she considered what she would do with the letter, the phone rang. It was Sarah, calling for her birthday.

"Happy Birthday, Sarah," she said, her voice smooth and devoid of any emotion. Then, Amelia hung up, and prepared the letter to be sent.
