The notebook was tucked into the back of a drawer, almost hidden. "Start a business." "Learn to play the piano." "Travel the world." Mark's fingers clenched around the worn cover. He'd always considered her ambitions a waste of time, something he felt he should control. A burning sensation spread through his chest.

He secretly applied for a small business loan in her name, forging her signature. When it came through he would say she wasn't ready. That it was too soon. That he needed to protect her from herself. He would slowly destroy it, slowly take everything she wanted away.

He bought her a piano, a beautiful grand. He would get his friends over and make so much noise, she wouldn’t be able to hear herself think. It would be a noise like he’d always made for her.
