Rain lashed against the pawn shop window, mirroring the tremor in Elias's hands. He clutched the faded photograph, his knuckles white. The old man behind the counter, a mountain of a person with a permanent squint, eyed him with a bored indifference. "Looking for something, kid?" Elias swallowed hard, the lump in his throat making speech difficult. "I... I think you might have something belonging to my grandmother." The photograph depicted her, younger, radiant, wearing the ring. A wave of heat washed over him, a burning shame he couldn't quite place.

He pointed a shaky finger at the display case. It was a long shot, he knew, but his heart hammered against his ribs. The shop felt cramped, the air thick with the scent of dust and regret.
