The pawn shop was a dim, cluttered haven, the air heavy with unspoken histories. Sarah, fresh from a particularly brutal breakup, felt small, almost invisible. She hadn't eaten all day. The ring, a delicate silver filigree, glinted under the harsh light. It was unmistakable, the same one her grandmother, Evelyn, had lost years ago. Her grandmother had always been a rock, a safe harbor. Now, Sarah felt completely adrift.

"How much?" Her voice cracked, a tiny sound lost in the stale air. The shop owner, a woman with eyes that seemed to have seen everything, just raised an eyebrow.

Sarah’s fingers traced the outline of the ring in the display. The thought of her grandmother’s happiness, now lost, triggered a sob that she struggled to contain. The price was too high, a mountain she couldn't climb right now. She felt the weight of her choices, of the path she had walked, pressing down on her.

"I... I can't afford it right now," she whispered, her voice barely audible. Her cheeks burned with an unfamiliar feeling. She wanted to vanish, to disappear into the shadows.
