The dining hall, usually a place of laughter and chatter, felt strangely hollow. Maria picked at her food, unable to taste anything. The accusation hung over her like a dark cloud. Every glance from her peers felt like a condemnation.

Her friends, once so supportive, seemed to be distancing themselves. Their conversations quieted whenever she approached. She felt a growing sense of isolation, a complete withdrawal from her usual social life.

She’d never felt this alone. Her hands shook as she pushed the food away. The cheerful music that played in the background grated on her nerves. She wanted to scream.
