“I am so sorry,” the receptionist stammered, handing Clara the corrected paperwork. “It was a clerical error.” The words seemed to bounce off her, leaving her feeling detached, adrift. The diagnosis of diabetes, the constant blood sugar checks, the dietary restrictions… all for someone else.

She walked outside, the crisp autumn air offering no comfort. The leaves, once vibrant, now seemed dull and lifeless. The world had shifted, leaving her feeling unsteady, uncertain of her footing.

She stopped on the sidewalk, watching the passing cars, each a blur of motion. It was as if she'd been robbed, not of something tangible, but of her own understanding of her body. The emptiness threatened to overwhelm her.
