The elevator doors opened, and as she stepped into the echoing lobby, Elena felt the familiar pang of… unease. It was the same feeling as when her stomach would drop on the roller coaster, or when a bully would call her names. The words of the office grapevine, now fact, were like a blow to the gut. The new hire made more than she did.

She walked towards the revolving doors. She needed to escape. The air outside was crisp, cold. She shivered, though it wasn’t cold. Her steps quickened. She felt a desperate need to get away from everything that reminded her of her place.
