He pulled himself up the pull-down stairs, the metal groaning in protest. He already felt overwhelmed with settling in, and this attic was just another burden. He felt as though every action was being judged.

He found a box filled with old journals. He felt a moment of hesitation before opening it. The ink had faded, the pages brittle. He read a few entries, discovering someone's deepest thoughts and fears.

He felt like an intruder, privy to secrets he wasn't meant to know. His breath caught in his throat. He quickly closed the box, his hands shaking. He left the attic abruptly.
